Clinton County, New York Warrant Search

Warrants authorize a law enforcement agency to take someone into custody or search a specific location. The judicial officer who issues a warrant must sign it, while the affiant (requesting officer) must provide enough objective basis to justify an arrest, search, or warrant.

Although a warrant is court-issued, it does not automatically become a public record in New York. Under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) (specifically N.Y. Pub. Off. Law § 87(2)(e)), outstanding warrants are not considered open records until the action they authorize is completed and the document has been returned to the court.

If researching the existence of an active or past warrant, inquirers may contact the local Sheriff's Office, a court custodian, or search the state's electronic records system.
